Becon was incorporated in 1978 as a Bechtel subsidiary to provide merit-shop construction and plant maintenance capabilities to Bechtel and its clients in the petroleum, chemical, mining, power, industrial, and telecommunications industries in the United States. To date, Becon has completed over 250 projects in 30 states.
Highlights from Becon's history include:
1978: Becon Construction Co. founded to do merit-shop work.
1981: Becon's first large contract was signed with Oklahoma Gas and Electric to build a 550 MW power plant in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
1981: Began the long and fruitful relationship with Union Carbide, building an air separation facility at UCC's Brownsville, Texas, plant.
1985: Signed a contract with Carolina Power and Light for maintenance at their nuclear sites in the Carolinas.
1985: Completed eight well sites and manifold stations for Exxon at remote locations near LaBarge, Wyoming.
1987: Broke ground on the Carolina Eastman PET facility in Columbia, South Carolina.
1989: Broke ground for a first-of-a-kind chemical-from-coal facility for Eastman Chemical in Kingsport, Tennessee.
1991: Completed the OxyMar VCM plant in Corpus Christi for Occidental Chemical.
1991: Became a charter member and sponsor to the National Center for Construction Education and Reserach (NCCER).
1992: Finished rebuilding the world's largest nitroparaffins facility for Angus Chemical in Sterlington, Louisiana, in a record nine months.
1992: Completed the North Carolina Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
1993: Completed Becon's first Steam Generator Replacement Project at the North Anna II site in Mineral, Virginia, for Virginia Power.
1994: Began environmental remediation work for the Navy at bases in Florida and South Carolina.
1994: Began work on the Polk Power IGCC Station for Tampa Electric Company.
1996: Broke ground on the pulp mill revamp for Weyerhaeuser in New Bern, North Carolina.
1997: Awarded eight plant services sites with Hoechst Celanese in North and South Carolina and Virginia.
1997: Received the Houston Business Roundtable Award for Safety Performance on the E-Train Project for Rohm & Haas.
1998: Completed the American Iron Reduction Plant in Convent, Louisiana. This 1.2 million metric ton direct reduced iron plant's schedule was three months shorter than the industry standard.
1998: Broke ground on the 440 MW Red Hills Generation Facility in Choctaw County, Mississippi. The 2 x 250 MW lignite-fired circulating fluidized boilers are two of the largest of this type in the world.
1999: The Gregory Power Project commenced in Ingleside, Texas. The first in a series of consecutive combined cycle gas-fired power facilities constructed in Texas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.
1999: The Merey Sweeny Coker Project started in Old Ocean, Texas. This project kicked off a series of delayed coker projects in Texas and Louisiana.
2000: Completed the Chevron NAO facility in Baytown, Texas. The NAO team was recognized with the Bechtel Construction Team of the Year Award.
